In 1879, the square was definitively named Place de la République (formerly Place du Château d'Eau) in homage to the values of the Republic. ... The competition was won by the Morice brothers who created the Monument de la République, in bronze and 25 meters high. The latter was inaugurated on July 14, 1883, the national holiday!
